AGM report

The AGM of United Wheatgrowers was held on the 29th June 2006 at 8:00am at the Sudima Grand Chancellor Hotel, Christchurch, as part of the annual Grains Conference.

The Chairman, John Wright commenced the meeting with his annual Chairman's Address, suggesting that it may be time to review the structures within the industry to best represent growers.  After discussion amongst the meeting participants, a motion was passed to further investigate this possibility.

The Annual Report for the year ended 31st January 2006 was presented to the meeting.

The Directors of UWG recommended to the Electoral Committee that the insurance levy for the 2007 season remain at the same level of $3.25 + GST per tonne after successfully negotiating this with Farmers Mutual Group in May.  The Electoral Committee supported this recommendation.

John Wright updated the meeting on the QAgrainz scheme which now had approximately 1,052 growers registered, two-thirds of whom had been audited.

Annette Campbell & Nick Pyke joined the meeting to discuss farmer saved seed.  They had been requested by the Wheat Growing, Flour Milling and Baking Research Liaison Committee to draft a discussion paper to clarify some industry confusion.  Annette then asked the meeting to break into two groups to discuss what "certified seed" meant to growers and how this fits into the chain.

Dr Don Wright, consultant to FMG insurance and plant breeder, also reported on some of the frost damage experienced in the 2005 growing season and presented some thoughts on the poor performance of European wheat cultivars in some NZ seasons.
